Eyelash Extensions Aftercare: 48‑Hour Rules and Daily Care Tips

The single most important rule after eyelash extensions is simple: keep them dry and hands-off for the first 24 to 48 hours. In New York, that means planning around subway heat, station steam, sudden rain, and the kind of commute that makes you want to rub your eyes without thinking. I do lash styling in a 60-minute appointment, and the aftercare is what protects the shape, the retention, and the comfort of your new set.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that protect retention
Right after your appointment, the adhesive needs time to fully cure. I generally recommend you treat the first two days like a no-steam, no-sweat, no-splash zone. It sounds strict, but it’s the fastest way to keep your lashes looking even instead of getting that early shedding that makes a set look sparse before it should.
48-hour checklist: No water on the lashes, no steam (hot showers, saunas, crowded-station steam), no heavy sweating, and no rubbing or tugging.
Face washing without wrecking the set
You can still wash your face. Keep your cleanser on the lower half of your face, use a damp cloth to clean around the eye area, and avoid soaking the lash line. If you’re a fast “sink splash” person, slow down for two days. A few careful seconds here usually saves you a fill later.
NYC commute and workout moves that help
If you’re commuting through Midtown East, humidity and heat can sneak up on you. Tie hair back so it doesn’t whip your eyes in the wind, dab sweat (don’t wipe) if you get hot on the subway, and skip face-forward sleeping the first night so you don’t crush one side.
Days 3 to 7: keep them clean, keep them light
After that first 48-hour window, your job switches from “protect the bond” to “protect the lash line.” In New York, pollution, makeup, sunscreen, and plain old subway air can build up quickly. Clean lashes usually hold better and feel better.
I recommend a gentle daily cleanse using an oil-free lash cleanser. Use your fingertips or a soft brush, keep pressure light, then rinse carefully and pat dry around the eyes. No digging. No cotton fuzz snagging at the base. And try not to pick at a lash that’s twisting. That twist is often just one lash that needs a quick comb-through.
Quick fix: If lashes look crossed in the morning, wetting them down is not the move. Let them fully dry first, then comb with a clean spoolie and a light hand.
Oil-free cleanser, clean spoolie: the 2 things that matter daily
If you only keep up with two habits, make it these: cleanse your lash line with an oil-free lash cleanser, and brush with a clean spoolie. Oils are a common reason extensions slip early, and it’s not just skincare oils. It’s oil-based makeup remover, cleansing balms, and some creamy concealers that migrate upward by the end of a long day.
Choose: oil-free cleanser, water-based eye products, and gentle patting motions.
Avoid: cleansing oils and balms around the eye area, waterproof makeup removers, and rubbing your eyes on the train when you’re tired.
And yes, I do other services here too, like facials, hydrafacials, microneedling, hyperpigmentation treatment, spot scar treatment, laser hair removal, and skin tag remova. But for lashes, simpler is better. The wrong remover can break down retention fast.
When to text us, and when it’s just time for a fill (2 to 3 weeks)
A little shedding is normal because your natural lashes shed. What I don’t want you doing is waiting until you’re missing a whole section, then trying to “even it out” by pulling at the rest. If something feels loose, pokey, or irritated, take a clear photo in good light and reach out. I’d rather look at it early than have you tough it out.
For fullness that stays consistent, plan your first fill at 2 to 3 weeks. That timing works well for most people with a normal lash cycle and a busy routine. I’m in Murray Hill / Midtown East, steps from Grand Central, so quick pre-commute or post-commute touch-ups are easy for Midtown workers and commuters coming in from Hoboken, Jersey City, Union City, Long Island City, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Quick reminders I tell every lash client in New York
Keep them dry for 24 to 48 hours. Keep oils away from your lash line. Clean daily with an oil-free lash cleanser, then comb with a clean spoolie. If you’re searching for skin care near me or facials near me, I’m happy to help with skincare too. For lashes, the goal is low-maintenance and predictable, even with NYC humidity and long commutes.
